A Word (or Two) From Junya
Oct 22nd, 2010 by admin

Yesterday, I hung out for a good portion of the day at Comme des Garcons, talking to folks. Despite the impression of surprise and playfulness left by the Comme des Garcons shops, which are designed by Rei Kawakubo and Toshiaki Oshiba (a collaboration that goes back more than 30 years), the headquarters are a no-frills, no-nonsense workspace: cutting tables, mannequins, offices, what you might expect. Tao Kurihara is warm, thoughtful, slightly impish and easy to talk to. She is no pushover, I felt. Tao giggled with something like alarm when I casually asked what shes planning for her fall show. Such information is a secret at Comme des Garcons; nobody knows what the different studios are working on until their respective shows, in Paris, and everybody at CdG respects that.

I loved my chat with Junya Watanabe. Junya is someone with a strong sense of characterthats evident when you talk to himand a good sense of humor. Of course, as many people in the fashion world know, Junya is also a man of few words. You have to tug and persist and avoid questions that can be answered with a yes or a no, though he will frequently answer that way. We had a productive conversation about Comme des Garcons and other matters and then as we were winding up, Junya smiled and said, Can I ask you a question?

Fire away, I said.

Junya wanted to know, in essence, how a critic views a designers clothesnot just his but any designers clothes. He asked if I was guided by personal taste, and I said no or rarely. I explained that I looked at each designer differently, based on their objectives and audience. I told him I consider their work over the long term; after all, great designers sometimes have bad shows. I told him that I consider what else might be going on in a house to influence a designers choices that seasoncommercial pressures, for instance. I think thats reasonable and fair. After all, one of the problems that we all face in life is a lack of informationsometimes we might make a better decision if we just had a little more information. Thats just as true for fashion collections as it is for relationships. I mentioned the blog and I said that there is clearly a preference to discuss the fashion leadersthe real designersand not the celebrity hunters, etc. Junya seemed surprised that I held different designers to different standards.

Shouldnt you treat them all the same, he asked.

I said, no, not at all, pointing that Junya holds himself to a pretty high creative standard. Not every designer struggles to come up with something new and technically innovative.

He was so talkative. It was fun. Then he asked me if I thought creativity was important in fashion.

Maybe Junya felt that the world cared less and less for creative design, maybe he was working on something particular in his studio and didnt yet have the answer. I dont know. I just told him what I thought. I said, I think its the most important thing of all. He drew his head back and a smile rapidly appeared on his face. I said Id see him in Paris.

My New MAC Loot
Oct 21st, 2010 by admin

Now that the adrenalines all gone, Im spent. Yesterday was exhausting. Sometimes, good things come in bulk. Probably explains why I failed to work properly last night.

One of the things that made my day was a trip to MAC in Glorietta. More on that later. Hehe.

Even when hanging out with the MAC Makeup Artists was so much fun in itself, of course, its never complete without a fab MAC buy, right? I had every intention of buying a fafi. I was supposed to go to the Fafi launch last week but life got in the way. Heh. But this decision to brave it on my own made the experience a little more original. I learned a bit of make up tricks from Jerwin. Again, more on that later.

Anyway, Ive been meaning to buy eye makeup to replace the Shimmer Wave Palette I bought from The Body Shop that broke into a gazillion pieces a while back. It sucked big time. Sniff.

I brought home the MAC fafi Eyes 1..

.. and the MAC Fluidline Eye-Liner Gel.

Retail price are Php 2,100.00 for the fafi eyes and Php 1,100.00 for the Fluidline. Gawd. I have to admit this is the most expensive makeup purchase Ive made to date! BUT I think itll be worth every peso.

I guess with all the suggestions I got for a gel liner, Ive decided to experiment on MAC FLuidline. Esp when I saw how it looked on me! Now theres a clue for whats next. Heehee.

All in the Family

Valerio Mezzanotti for The New York Times Models pose wearing creations by Christian Lacroix before his couture presentation.

Christian Lacroix is certainly wealthy in friends. Despite heavy financial pressures, he managed to present a fall haute couture collection of 24 looks at Les Arts Decoratifs. The couture show may be his last, unless his companys owner, Falic Group, can find a buyer for the house. According to Laure du Pavillon, the designers long-time press director, fabric suppliers, embroiderers and clients came to his aid for the show.

Everyone helped, she said. Ines de la Fressange and Bruno Frisoni of Roger Vivier, along with Diego della Valle, contributed shoes.

Two weeks ago, Mr. Frisoni said, I called Mr. della Valle and told him what was happening and he said, Yes, of course, were with him.

Mr. Frisoni was standing with Yves Carcelle, the president of LVMH, the former owner of the Lacroix brand, after the show. Mr. Frisoni continued, I said to Mr. Carcelle the best thing is to keep the name and do it in a very simple way, like Azzedine Alaia does. Christian has to continue.

Would LVMH consider repurchasing the house?

Oh, this I dont know! said Mr. Carcelle, smiling. Im here as a friend and not as a member of LVMH. His wife Rebecca suggested, half jokingly, that she might do some negotiating with her husband. Asked what dress she especially liked, Mrs. Carcelle immediately picked out the opening number, a trapeze dress in midnight blue silk crepe with a low back.

Sentiment may glaze the view, but the collection was wonderfully right. Mr. Lacroix has always had a gift for fanciful color, but these clothes were simple and somber. Perhaps they were supplied with the feeling of making-do, but its not a bad quality to have in fashion. The opening dress was indeed beautiful: a trapeze with full sleeves and that bare back finished with a white bow. A nipped-waist tweed jacket appeared with a short skirt in pearly faille scattered with sequins at the hem. There were a number of combinations of inky blue and black, including a dress with many tiers. Now the colors and textures were subtle yet somehow jaunty, like a blue stock-tie silk blouse with an ecru wool skirt and a boxy, gold-buttoned sailor jacket, or a little black dress layered with pleated black tulle.

The audience applauded for each outfit. The models had their heads wound in black turbans, and actually walked with ease. No false poses. Everyone stood as Mr. Lacroix came down the runway, stepping forward so that the path was narrowed. And two friends unfurled a home-made banner that said Christian Lacroix Forever.

Pierre Verdy/AFP/Getty Images A banner is displayed at the end Christian Lacroix’s couture show.

But the clothes, which had a real everyday chic, merited the attention just Mr. Lacroix deserves to have a place to make them.
